The Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, serving as the Archbishop’s seat. Located at 5 Jalan Bukit Nanas, the cathedral is renowned for its whitewashed exterior, twin spires, and stained glass windows from Paris depicting scenes of St. John the Evangelist. It stands adjacent to St. John’s Institution and is near landmarks such as Convent Bukit Nanas, Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, and the Kuala Lumpur Tower.

Q History

Established in 1883, the original church was a modest wooden structure built on the forested slopes of Bukit Nanas. This was later reconstructed with brick walls and a tiled roof, and currently serves as "The Community Services Centre." This building is undergoing restoration to house the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur Museum, slated to open in 2025. The present cathedral building commenced construction in 1954, was completed in 1955, and consecrated in 1962, at which point it was elevated to cathedral status. Over the years, the parish has transformed from a congregation of expatriates and Eurasians into a vibrant, cosmopolitan community that attracts both local parishioners and international visitors.
